Basidiomycetes in General

Origin: A very diverse group or class of fungi. They are very common in the summer and fall. They are made up of the shelf fungi, the mushrooms, toadstools, puffballs, the rusts and smut fungi. They are very common on decaying trees in the spring and summer and the mushrooms, rusts, smuts and toadstools are common near or on trees in forests and they grow on lawns (mushrooms) after several days of rain. They occur in high numbers, particularly in the summer and fall, and are considered important allergens.

Health effects: Many species cause allergic reactions.
